Importing Data from a Spreadsheet (CSV or Excel)

ByRichard Beezley
Overview
You can import dogs, people, entries, and other data from a spreadsheet file into the software.
Supported File Types
- .csv (comma-separated values) — recommended
- .xlsx (Microsoft Excel)
Preparing Your Spreadsheet
Before importing, make sure your file is formatted correctly:
- The first row must contain column headers (field names)
- Remove any blank rows, merged cells, or extra formatting
- Each row should represent one record (one dog, one person, etc.)
- For large files, consider breaking them into smaller batches of 100-200 rows
How to Import
- In the software, go to File → Import
- Select your spreadsheet file
- Map the columns in your spreadsheet to the corresponding fields in the software
- Review the preview and click Import
Google Form Import
If you collect entries via Google Forms, see our dedicated article on Google Form Import for specific instructions on formatting and importing Google Form responses.
Troubleshooting
- Import fails or skips rows? Check for special characters, extra-long text, or blank required fields in your spreadsheet
- Wrong data in wrong fields? Re-check your column mapping during the import step
- Duplicate records? The software may create duplicates if the same data is imported twice — check your records after importing
If you need help formatting your spreadsheet, open a support ticket and attach a sample of your file.
